Four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands' criminal activities take fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms.
 
Although the film is entertaining, it really has two stories going at the same time.  If McQueen would have focused on the actual "widows" portion of the story alone and not the political campaigning side so much, then the movie would have a stronger impact on its audience.
 
FUN FACT:  According to director Steve McQueen, Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall improvised many of their scenes.
